What is the Difference between AWS Account and AWS IAM User Account

Let’s understand the  difference between an “AWS Account” and an AWS “IAM User Account” in layman language.

1. AWS Account: An AWS Account is like having your very own playground in the cloud. It’s a special place that belongs to you. With an AWS Account, you have complete control and ownership over the playground. You can decide what kind of equipment and games are available, who can come and play, and how everything is organized. You have a special key that lets you access and manage the playground.

2. AWS IAM User Account: Imagine you have a group of friends who also want to play in your AWS playground. You can create individual passes for each of your friends, and each pass is like an AWS IAM User Account. Each friend gets their own pass with their name on it. These passes allow your friends to enter the playground and play with the equipment and games you’ve set up, but they can only do certain things based on the rules you’ve set.

For example, you might give one friend a pass that allows them to play on the swings, another friend a pass that lets them use the sandbox, and yet another friend a pass that allows them to climb on the jungle gym. Each friend can have different permissions and access to different parts of the playground, but they can’t change the overall setup of the playground or give passes to other friends.

In summary, an AWS Account is like having your own playground in the cloud, where you have full control. An AWS IAM User Account is like a special pass that you create for your friends, giving them limited access to specific parts of the playground based on the rules you’ve set.

I am still not clear , just read more . . .

1. AWS Account: Imagine you have a big treasure chest that holds all your toys. This treasure chest is like an AWS Account. It’s where you keep all your special things and have complete control over them. You are the boss of the treasure chest, and you have a special key that lets you open it and play with your toys. The treasure chest is yours, and you can do lots of things with it, like adding new toys, organizing them, or even giving some away.

2. AWS IAM User Account: Sometimes, you want to share your treasure chest with your friends or family, but you don’t want everyone to have the same level of control as you. So, you create special keys for each of your friends, let’s say “Bob” and “Susan,” and those keys are like AWS IAM User Accounts. With these special keys, Susan and Bob can open the treasure chest and play with some toys, but they can only do certain things that you allow them to do. You might tell Susan that she can play with the dolls, and Bob that he can play with the cars. This way, you are still in charge of the treasure chest, but you can give your friends access to some toys based on what you want them to do.

In summary, an AWS Account is like a treasure chest that you have complete control over, while an AWS IAM User Account is like a special key that you give to your friends, allowing them to access and play with some toys in the treasure chest, but with certain limitations that you set.

  1. Great explanation! The analogies used really helped me understand the difference between an AWS Account and an AWS IAM User Account. Comparing them to a playground and passes for friends made it so much clearer. I appreciate the simplicity of the explanation, making it easier for beginners like me to grasp the concept. Looking forward to more informative posts like this. Keep up the good work!
